Youth Tech Symposium - May 29, 2015
On May 29, we (the Tech Team) went to a student led tech symposium by Youth Tech Nation. What it is exactly is a symposium where students go around and give presentations to other students about things technology related. The sessions we went to were a Keynote presentation - talking about how youth have a voice and the should express that voice via social media- and an Edublogs presentation - talking about a grade 6 class that uses Edublogs to say what they are doing.
Me and Isabelle gave a Beginner's Guide to Blogger session. The reason for this is because we both have blogs on Blogger and felt that we knew a great deal about it. We presented at two sessions.
The first one didn't go too smoothly because of the fact that the mouse and keyboard weren't working. Also, the Chromebooks the students were using to follow along with us didn't work. Our second session went a lot smoother, the computer worked, people followed along, etc... And after the presentation people came up to me and told me how good I was at public speaking (which is a story for another time)!
Something that I would change would have to be the fact that the Chromebooks were having a difficult time connecting to WiFi. I understand that sometimes it is hard to control whether or not they connect, but I believe that they should, at least, get a stronger WiFi router in the school. Furthermore, I think that they should change the times people present. Basically what I mean by this is that I wanted to see my fellow Tech Team members present. I wanted to see how much they know their topic and I wanted to help provide support for them. Lastly, they should get the exact number of Pizza coupons for the number of people that found a Twitter bird hidden around the school - when I got down to claim my prize, they said they ran out so I got a Google pencil case instead.
Would I attend again next year? Of course! I have no doubt that I will be coming to the symposium again next year. I absolutely loved it: The people I met, the prizes that were won, the sessions I saw, basically everything that they had there was amazing. My all time favorite session there was the Keynote presentation at the beginning. It was led by this business called Jo(e). They talked about how youth have a very large voice and are capable by using it via social media. Also, they really inspired me to go out and use my voice for great things.
Here are some pictures:
This is me getting interviewed about my thoughts on the Youth Tech Nation Symposium.
These wonderful people are from the Jo(e) business.
