5 Common Misconceptions: Part III
1. Dogs sweat by salivating
Dogs are actually regulating body temperature when they pant. But, they do sweat through their footpads
2. Fires and explosions can happen in space
Fire is a reaction (the combustion of gasses in air) and there is a serious air shortage in space to release its energy as heat and light, fire fundamentally can't exist. A short fire could be realistic, because it would be fed by the air trapped inside of the ship.
3. Lemmings do not jump off cliffs
This misconception was created from the Disney film White Wilderness. The lemmings were actually pushed off the cliff from the cameramen/photographers.
4. Napoleon was short
The history files stating that he was 5 feet 2 inches, was measured in French feet. That would convert to 5 feet 6 inches today.
5. Oranges are always orange
In many countries, oranges are green, even when ripe.
